Mart sales of hoggets saw bigger numbers over the past week, with a lot of farmers targeting sales pre-Easter to market their hoggets.

However, in most marts, the trade was a little more subdued, with factory agents keen to draw a line and keep a lid on prices.

Hoggets weighing 50kg-plus are selling for €126 to €128/head, with €130/head the upper limit of the market. These prices were back €5/head in a lot of cases compared with last week.

Very heavy hoggets saw reduced demand, with factory agents reluctant to go too far for overweight hoggets.

Lighter hoggets weighing 42kg to 48kg are now selling from €110 to €118/head.

More spring lambs are making an appearance in sales. Most good-quality spring lambs weighing 44kg to 46kg are selling for €125 to €128/head. Heavy spring lambs weighing 48kg to 50kg are in general making up to €130/head, with very few agents going beyond this point.

The trade for ewes with lambs at foot remains strong and numbers appearing in sales are not showing signs of slackening.

Young ewes with two lambs at foot are moving from €210 to €270/unit. Aged ewes with two lambs are selling from €180 to €200/unit.

Aged ewes with a single lamb at foot are selling from €160 to €190/unit. Good-quality young ewes with a single lamb are selling up to €200/unit.

Cull ewes

Fleshed ewes continue to see a strong trade selling from €100/head upwards. A large proportion of fleshed ewes are selling from €110 to €120/head. Large-framed fleshed ewes are selling from €125 to €140/head. Feeding ewes are moving from €70 to €90/head.
