After announcing his resignation as president of the ICSA on Wednesday, Patrick Kent has said that he plans on continuing advancing agricultural causes at a European level.
“I knew yesterday morning that I’d be resigning because I was offered an opportunity in Europe,” Kent told the Irish Farmers Journal on Thursday morning.
Kent has been named as one of five on a replacement list for Mick Wallace TD in his election bid for MEP of the Ireland south constituency.
I’ll be back farming and in and out of Brussels a little and that will suit me
MEP candidates must submit a list of five possible replacements if they get elected in case the situation arises that the seat falls vacant.
“Mick Wallace triggered it, he approached me and I didn’t hesitate when he asked.
“I don’t agree with everything he says but he’s looking for an agricultural adviser and I believe that he will get elected as MEP. I feel that people of his courage and calibre are lacking in politics.
“I’ll be back farming and in and out of Brussels a little and that will suit me.”
Kent added that he had high hopes that the ICSA would continue to thrive in the future.
“The ICSA has been a good organisation. I think I’ve taken it to a new level and I hope that it will continue to develop further. There’s a lot coming down the line with Brexit and CAP reform and I wish them well.”
ICSA elections
Kent had been due to stand down as president at the end of this year and his resignation will mean that the ICSA will now be looking for a new president.
“We would have been scheduled to have elections by the end of the year so we’ll just have to bring them forward,” Eddie Punch, general secretary of the ICSA told the Irish Farmers Journal.
“We would like to thank Patrick Kent for his work and vision on a number of topics, and wish him the best of luck to him in the future.”
