Department of Agriculture, Teagasc and the EPA officials working on Ireland’s plan to improve water quality travelled to New Zealand to study how it is managing agricultural pressures on water.

While Ireland focuses on limiting nitrogen use, New Zealand has opted to focus on limiting the loss of nitrogen from farms.

Detailing their findings, Teagasc’s Noel Meehan said New Zealand farms must secure consent from their regional council to operate. The licence is conditional on setting a target of nitrogen loss from the farm.
