Dairy demand in China is really booming in 2019 and shows no signs of slowing despite heightened trade tensions with the US.
For April, Chinese dairy imports continued their double-digit growth. The most recent data shows Chinese buyers imported almost 262,000t of dairy product in April, which is a massive 31% ahead of the same month last year.
This brings Chinese dairy imports for the first four months of 2019 (Jan-Apr) to a cumulative 1.1m tonnes, which is more than 17% ahead of the same period last year.
The strong growth in Chinese dairy imports is being driven by buoyant demand for infant formula, whole and skimmed milk powder (WMP and SMP), as well as milk and cream products.
Infant formula imports are up almost 30% in the first four months of 2019 to 110,000t, while WMP imports have risen by a third (+33%) to just over 330,000t. SMP imports have soared more than 30% so far in 2019 to almost 132,000t, while Chinese imports of milk and cream products are 34% ahead of last year at 271,000t.
The only dairy commodities not seeing strong demand from Chinese buyers are whey powder and butter. Imports of butter are down 23% year on year at 32,500t, while whey powder imports are back 20% this year at 150,000t. The fall-off in demand for whey in China is a result of the outbreak of African swine fever, which is set to wipe out a third of China’s 450m pig herd. Whey powder is imported as a feed for pigs in China.
