Almost 250 complaints have been made about farmers spreading slurry in the last two years.
The complaints to county councils relate to both the smell and road conditions following slurry spreading.
Some 145 complaints were lodged with county councils about the smell of slurry spreading.
To date this year, 56 complaints have been formally lodged about the smell of slurry, while a further 89 complaints were submitted in 2018.
The information, revealed under a Freedom of Information request by the Irish Farmers Journal, shows that farmers from Co Cork fell foul of public nostrils most often.
They were the subject of 19 formal complaints this year and 27 last year.
Most, but not all, of the objections to slurry spreading were because of the odour.
Other councils to record formal criticism of the smell of slurry spreading were Carlow, Donegal and Mayo.
Road conditions
County councils also received complaints in relation to road conditions following slurry spreading.
Louth county council received the highest number of complaints about the condition of roads, with six to date in 2019 and 19 complaints lodged last year.
In neighbouring Co Monaghan, five complaints this year have been added to the list of 10 from last year.
Nationwide, there were 73 complaints recorded about road conditions following slurry spreading last year and a further 26 to date in 2019.
