The Irish Farmers Journal understands that cross contamination in an AI centre in France has led to a number of Friesian calves hitting the ground, where Charolais calves were expected. The issue surrounds the Charolais bull Voimo (VMO) supplied in Ireland through Progressive Genetics.

It is understood that semen used two years ago in Irish suckler herds has resulted in around 20 calves born from a French Friesian bull and not the intended Voimo.

Voimo’s semen sells for €38 a straw.

It is expected these 20 offspring are now 14 to 16 months old and that the French AI company in question has dealt with the affected farmers and a compensation package agreed.
