Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has said that while the potential of an imminent Mercosur deal is “concerning” that the Government “can’t veto a deal we haven’t seen”.

Minister Creed made the statement in response to a question from IFA environment chair Thomas Cooney at the launch of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan in Government buildings on Thursday 27 June.

“I’m aware of the speculation that we’re on the cusp of a deal,” Minister Creed said.

“We haven’t seen any outcomes yet but we will continue to ensure our voice is heard.”

He added that the Government had engaged on every level in expressing Irish concerns on the deal with the European Commission.

ICSA general secretary Eddie Punch pointed out that Irish farmers felt there was a hypocrisy in asking them to conform to climate-friendly measures if meat was being imported from country with a poor climate record.

“Asking farmers to plant more trees and reduce livestock seems utterly bizarre when we’re importing meat from a country that is cutting down rainforests,” Punch said.
