With around 80% of the winter barley harvest now complete around the country, the true extent of variability in yields is becoming clear. Yields around the country are ranging from 2t/ac to 5t/ac with sowing date, weather, chemical stress, BYDV, disease pressure, rotation and many other factors having an influence on this.
Co Donegal has been no different, with yield reports of between 3t/ac and 4.2t/ac reported. We visited one Donegal grower, Ivan Peoples, at the weekend to see how his harvest progress was going.
Ivan was harvesting Orwell winter barley at the time and he was 75% through his total winter barley area. Yields were coming in at 3.5t/ac at 15.5% moisture content. Quality was good at 65KPH.
