A case of African swine fever (ASF) has been discovered in Slovakia on a small farm near the Ukraine border.

The outbreak was discovered in a batch of four pigs which were subsequently culled to help prevent further infection.

Stricter rules concerning the movement pigs and other measures have been introduced in Slovakia by order of the European Commission.

The disease has decimated the Chinese pig herd and fears of its spread in Europe have led to restrictions in a number of EU countries.

The Department of Agriculture has called for Irish people travelling this year to ensure they don’t bring foreign meat products back from affected countries.
