Macra na Feirme president Thomas Duffy has said that the organisation will not be taking an official position on Beef Plan Movement factory protests, but that their members are free to attend protests if they wish to.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Duffy said: “We have a number of concerns about beef prices and processors' requirements.”

It was put to the president that there had been a number of calls from individual Macra members on social media platforms such as WhatsApp to join the protests, but Duffy reiterated that while members were free to attend protests, the organisation would not be taking an official position on the subject.

Protests

Protests are ongoing at 22 factories around the country, with 14 plants now closed and staff temporarily laid off due to the protests.

The ICSA and IFA also stated that their members were free to decide for themselves if they wished to attend protests.
