IFA president Joe Healy has said that a letter sent by Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) to Beef Plan Movement farmers shows that the current rules and enforcement structure in the area are “a complete joke”.

Last week, the CCPC wrote to co-chairs of the Beef Plan Movement Eamon Corley and Hugh Doyle, warning them they may be in breach of consumer law over factory protests.

Healy said that the CCPC needed “to be replaced with a new regulator who acts for all parties in the chain”.

“If anyone needs to be investigated, it is the meat factories,” he said.

“The CCPC has previously raided the IFA offices and threatened us and other farmers on numerous occasions. The CCPC is not fit for purpose from a farmers’ point of view,” he said.
