A delegation from the IFA met with Tánaiste Simon Coveney on Tuesday to discuss issues surrounding the sheep sector created by Brexit.
“Our delegation highlighted the need for a strong environmental scheme of up to €10,000 in the next CAP,” said IFA national sheep chair Seán Dennehy.
Issues raised with the Tánaiste included:

New Zealand lamb quota.
Impact of exchange rates.
Tariffs on UK imports.
Northern Ireland lamb imports.
The land bridge route.
The need for compensation.
Dennehy believes “sheep farmers are critical to environmental sustainability, especially in hill and mountain areas. It is essential that there is a strong environmental payment to farmers in the next CAP.”
