Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1’s Today with Miriam O’Callaghan show, An Tánaiste Simon Coveney has confirmed “there will have to be checks and tariffs in order to limit the damage and security risk in the event of a no-deal Brexit”.

The comments came after UK prime minister Boris Johnson wrote to the EU confirming the UK will no longer accept previous commitments made in December 2017 regarding the Good Friday Agreement and keeping hard border infrastructure out of the island of Ireland.

The Tánaiste stressed he is “not going to facilitate the UK in moving away from these commitments but there will have to be checks somewhere in order to reassure partners and respect EU rules”.
