With continued factory price pressure and more unsettled weather in some areas of the country, there has been another slip in the prices paid for all types of lambs in the past week.

Heavy butchers’ lambs over 50kg are selling mainly from €94 to €98, which is back by about €4/head on last week.

The tops of heavy butchers’ lambs are reaching €100/head on average, but some mart managers have seen slightly higher prices.

The weather is starting to increase the supply of fleshed lambs in some areas, particularly the west, and this is having an impact on the trade.

Factory lambs from 45kg to 50kg are selling mainly from €88 to €95, with some prices of over €96/head being recorded.

This marks another decrease of about €2 to €3/head on last week.

Lambs from 42kg to 44kg are ranging mainly from €86 to €91/head, which is back by €1 to €2/head on last week.

The store lamb trade has held very strongly up to now, but with factory lamb prices easing, this is starting to have an impact on store lamb prices also, with the gap for returning a margin narrowing.

The average 40kg store is making from €75 to €83/head, or around €2/kg at the upper end, with prices creeping back to €1.95/kg.

Lighter store lambs from 35kg to 37kg are selling mainly from €73 to €78/head, depending on quality, with some sales seeing prices of up to €80/head. Lighter types from 30kg to 35kg are selling mainly from €65/head to €74/head. Breeding sales are still continuing, with hoggets from €140 to €160/head, with top-quality types from €180 to €200/head.
