Saturday’s sale at Carrigallen Mart saw a special weanling bull show and sale take place. In total, there were over 500 cattle on offer on the day.
Mart manager Helen Kells said that the trade was stronger than expected given the numbers on offer. She said that the trade for bulls was stronger than the trade for heifers, with less than 5% of the bulls on offer going home unsold.

This Charolais-cross bull, born March 2019 and weighing 385kg, sold for €865 (€2.25/kg).
The main sources of demand were farmers for bulls from 300kg to 400kg and for all types of heifers. Helen added that there was good exporter demand for all types of bulls, from average continental types to well-muscled types.
Heavy bulls over 500kg were quite a good trade considering the beef trade, but this was mainly due to strong feeder demand.

This Angus-cross bull, born March 2019 and weighing 315kg, sold for €700 (€2.22/kg).
Prices topped out at €1,370, which was paid for a 440kg bull. Other bulls over 500kg sold mainly from €1,090 to €1,160/head.
Bulls from 420kg to 500kg sold from €800/head for a plain 440kg Limousin to €1,230 for a well-muscled 450kg Limousin. Prices averaged mainly from €900 to €1,050/head.
Lighter bulls from 300kg to 420kg were mainly bought by farmer buyers and exporters. The average 350kg bull was selling from €830 to €900/head, which was similar to the prices paid last year. Top-quality types sold for over €1,000/head at times.

This Limouisin-cross weanling bull, born March 2019 and weighing 330kg, sold for €775 (€2.35/kg).
There were only a handful of plainer bulls in the same weight range and these sold mainly from €685/head to €775/head. Helen said that the majority of those on offer at the sale were good-quality continental types and these were easily sold, but some plainer bulls were a slower sell than these.
Lighter bulls under 320kg were still quite a strong trade. The majority of these sold mainly from €700 to €800 for good-quality types. Plainer bulls in the same weight range sold mainly from €600/head to €700/head.

This Charolais-cross weanling bull, born April 2019 and weighing 365kg, sold for €940 (€2.58/kg).
