The oral hearing into the proposed South Kerry Greenway is likely to continue into a third week. Taking place in the Manor West Hotel, Tralee, it commenced on 8 October and was scheduled to last until 18 October.

An Bord Pleanála inspector Karla McBride said that following the conclusion of the oral hearing, she would make one of three recommendations: approve the CPO, approve it with modifications, or refuse it.

Proposed route

The proposed 32km route from Glenbeigh to Renard comprises 222 plots of land owned by 197 land owners.

Kerry County Council is denying it had decided on the greenway route prior to meeting landowners.

Local farmers, some of whom are members of the Greenway Information Group, have said they are not against the greenway, but are opposed to the use of CPOs.

The IFA is objecting on four grounds: it believes Kerry County Council didn’t follow all legal requirements; the proposal contravenes assurances given that a CPO wouldn’t be used; the development contravenes policy on the future planning of greenways; and the environmental reports are incomplete.
