The dairy sector cannot keep adding cow numbers and expect agriculture to hit its climate targets, a senior Department of Agriculture official has warned.

Bill Callanan, head of environmental policy, said: “We remain ambitious for dairy, but it cannot be around numbers.”

On the prospect of a herd reduction, he said Government policy was clear that the herd is safe, provided the necessary actions were taken.

However, he warned that the pace of embracing these actions would be a challenge. The agriculture sector has a national target of reducing emissions by 10% to 15% by 2030.

Callanan said the Department was currently putting together a roadmap setting out what needs to be done to achieve the reduction.

“I will be honest with you. Some of those are going to be extremely challenging and quite a number will dismiss them as unattainable. However, they will be necessary if we have to make our targets,” he warned.
