Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has categorically stated that imported meat cannot carry the Origin Ireland Bord Bia Quality logo.

In response to a parliamentary question from deputy Michael Fitzmaurice, the minister said he was happy to put on the Dáil record the truth in regard to Bord Bia and meat imports.

“Meat imported from mainland Europe which is processed and packaged in the Republic of Ireland cannot carry the Origin Ireland Bord Bia Quality logo,” the minister said.

“For meat to carry the Origin Ireland Bord Bia Quality logo, it must come from animals born, reared and slaughtered in the Republic of Ireland where the farm and the processing plants are members of Bord Bia’s Quality Assurance Schemes.”

The information comes on the back of heavy criticism of Bord Bia from farmers and members of the farm community.

Most recently, IFA deputy presidential candidate Brian Rushe has tapped into the seam of frustration vented by many farmers at hustings around the country and called for a full review of Bord Bia.

The minister further clarified the criteria in regard to meat from Northern Ireland.

“The Produced and Processed Ireland and Northern Ireland Bord Bia Quality Logo can only be used for meat from animals born and reared on Bord Bia Quality Assured farms in the Republic of Ireland and subsequently slaughtered in Bord Bia Quality Assured processing plants in Northern Ireland,” he said.

“Meat from animals born outside the island of Ireland and imported into Ireland cannot carry any Bord Bia Quality Assurance logo.”
