The increased prices being paid for factory and butchers’ lambs in the past week have been a welcome development for farmers and store buyers. The biggest lift in prices has been for heavier lambs.

Mart managers have said that butchers’ lambs are seeing the largest increase in prices, while factory lambs are also seeing a strong lift.

Heavy butchers’ lambs over 50kg have been met with increased demand in the past week. This has led to prices jumping by €6 to €7/head, with some marts recording a slightly stronger increase than this.

Lambs over 50kg are selling mainly from €105 to €110/head, with some choice lots making over €115/head at some sales.

Factory agents are said to be very active also and are focusing on sourcing all types of fleshed lambs. Mart managers are also saying that they are starting to source short-keep lambs now for a short finish prior to slaughter.

Factory lambs from 45kg to 50kg are selling mainly from €96 to €98, with prices of up to €102/head being recorded at some sales.

This is an increase of more than €5/head in the past week.

The level of flesh on lambs is less of a factor now, with agents now sourcing these for a short feed also.

Lambs from 42kg to 44kg are ranging mainly from €87 to €90/head, with a few making over €93/head in some sales.

The store trade has steadied once again. Those from 30kg to 33kg are selling mainly from €70 to €75/head in most areas. Those from 33kg to 38kg are selling mainly from €78 to €85/head, again up a few euros per head on last week.

Heavier stores around the 40kg mark are selling mainly from €88 to €90/head, with few top-quality types making over €92/head.

Where good-quality store ewe lambs are on offer, these are selling for a premium of €8 to €10/head on ram lambs.
