Some 40% of the €4.3m for the Corncrake Conservation Project, €1.8m, will be spent on land purchase and land compensation.

The project budget will include habitat management measures, landowner workshops, predator control, public awareness activities and the development of new scientific methods for detecting and monitoring of the corncrake, a spokesperson for the Department of Culture said.

The project aims to deliver conservation across a total of 1,000ha, subject to landowner agreement, in the form of land purchase/land lease or multi-annual compensation payments.

Habitats

“Farmers will play a key role in the establishment, maintenance and creation of habitats that are suitable for corncrake. The creation of early and late cover and the adoption of corncrake-friendly mowing are, therefore, key elements of this project.”

A results-based payment system will be linked to the quality of the habitat.
