Saturday last saw a special dispersal sale take place at Cahir Mart. In all, there were about 120 cows on offer and these were nearly all February and March calving. The herd was made up of a mixture of Friesian cows and some crossbred cows.
Mart manager Jonathan O’Sullivan said that there was strong demand at the sale, as there always is for genuine dispersal sales.

Lot 31 This Friesian cross cow, born February 2014 and with and EBI of €230, sold for €1,560.
He said that the best demand at the sale was for young Friesian cows, with the crossbred cows not being met with quite as strong of demand, as it is mostly Friesian and Holstein cows in the area.
He said that the best young Friesian cows sold for up to €1,700/head at the top of the market, with most top-quality types making over the €1,500/head mark. Friesian cows sold mainly from €1,300 to €1,500/head.

Lot 30 This Friesian cross cow, born February 2016 and with and EBI of €148 sold for €1,180.
Jonathan said that the Jersey-cross cows were not met with quite as strong of demand. These sold mainly from €1,100 to €1,300 for better-quality types.

Lot 29. This Friesian cross cow, born February 2015, with and EBI of €144 sold for €1,500.
However, there were some plainer types that sold for less than €900/head. He added that cows from the sale were bought by 24 different buyers, so there is plenty of demand out there for a genuine clearance.
Commission rates are 1.5% to the seller and 2.5% to the buyer.

Lot 38. This Jersey cross cow, born February 2013 and with an EBI of €79, sold for €1,220.

Lot 36. This Friesian cross cow, born March 2015 and with and EBI of €132 sold for €1,500.

Lot 24. This Friesian cross cow, born March 2015 and with and EBI of €167 sold for €1,340.
