Degree: “I am a first-year agricultural engineering student at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), with a particular interest in the advancement of fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness of the machinery we use on our farms.”

Agricultural engineering: “Studying at GMIT has been great. We have a small class of 10 students in first year. We spend a lot of time learning the practical side of engineering, with three days a week at Mountbellew Agricultural College.”

Our farm: “We run an all-organic beef and tillage farm. Our main crop is oats, which is contracted to Flahavans for their organic porridge. We also grow wheat and barley for break crops, which is sold for animal feed.”

Beef: “Weanlings, heifers and bullocks are bought in for fattening and finished under 36 months. It takes a little longer to fatten an animal in an organic system, as they are finished on grass with minimal meal. We keep a couple of sucklers to manage the waste silage not used by the stores.”

Eoin invented the ‘Moveable Safety Barrier’ as part of the ESB Networks National Safety Challenge.

National safety challenge: “In 2018, I invented the moveable safety barrier as part of the ESB Networks National Safety Challenge. My idea was a movable non-return safety barrier which passes over the calf, preventing the cow from attacking the farmer. It is a unique concept, in that it prevents the need for the farmer to come in direct contact with the cow.”

Future goals: “I’m still unsure what job I may have in future, but I hope to be in a position to create advancements within the agricultural engineering industry that will be of benefit to farmers and the wider community.”

Quotable quote: “For as long as agriculture remains prominent in Ireland, there will always be a need for bright engineers who bring fresh ideas to the sector.”
