Mart managers say they are willing to help broker deals between farmers, the Associated Livestock Marts (ALM) group has announced.

Yesterday, the Government announced that all marts were to close and efforts are now under way to see what alternatives can be but in place that comply with the new restrictions while continuing the trade.

ALM, which represents many privately-owned marts and some co-operative marts, urged farmers with stock to sell or those looking to purchase stock to contact their local mart manager.

It said mart managers and owners have worked closely with their clients over generations and would ensure a fair price was achieved and that the sale was done in a professional and correct manner.

Supports

ALM acknowledged the need to do everything possible to protect public health but said the closure of marts until at least 19 April presented stiff challenges to the agricultural industry.

Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed was called on by the mart group to secure a financial support package for farmers.

“Farmers are and will continue to be the back bone of Ireland, for this momentous and courageous group of people financial support must be put in place with immediate effect while also encompassing tax reliefs regarding their inability to purchase stock at this time,” an ALM statement reads.
