The sheep trade continues to gain upward movement on the back of tight supplies. Factory agents are working hard to try to secure numbers.

The absence of a regular network of mart sales is contributing to the challenge that faces them.

Reports indicate that a price of €6/kg is now freely available for any producer trading hoggets next week, while producers with significant numbers on hand are pushing prices to €6.10/kg to €6.20/kg on average and slightly higher in cases.

Spring lambs

Prices for spring lambs are also creeping upwards. Reports show producers with numbers on hand securing base prices of €6.30/kg, which leaves prices rising to €6.50/kg.

It is advisable for producers with sheep on hand to market them as they come fit, but, at the same time, keep abreast of the market and be mindful of any upward movement to ensure animals are securing the best price at the time of selling.

An updated price report will be published on www.farmersjournal.ie on Monday.
