The people of Ireland have pulled together in a bid to raise money for young Dan Donoher, a child who needs life-changing surgery in America at a cost of €2m.

A Go Fund Me campaign has already raised over €1.5m, with awareness created online through various challenges. Many sports star have lent their weight to the cause too, including Kilkenny hurler Henry Shefflin and Dublin footballer Bernard Brogan.

The challenge

When Wicklow farmer Colm Tyrrell was nominated to run 5k and donate to the fundraiser in an online challenge, he decided to do something different to help create awareness of Dan's situation.

His idea involves wellies.

"I already do quite a bit of running, so 5k would not be much for me. I decided to push myself and I am going to run and walk 40km with a 40kg weight on my back, wearing wellies," Colm told the Irish Farmers Journal.

Make a donation

The Tinahely man is running the 40km in sections and his final part will take place on Friday 24 April.

"I would like to encourage people to donate to the campaign, even if they can only give €5. I will be making a donation after my run and I will be nominating people to do the same," said Colm.
