Dowra Mart held its first big show and sale of the weanling sales season last Saturday. West Cavan is known for top-quality weanlings and, with an abundance of autumn-calving herds in the region, Saturday’s sale attracted 200 bull weanlings from all across the west.

Trade was very good, with a number of key buyers in attendance. Mart manager Terry McGovern said: “We’ve never really seen a lull in sales at all this year with large sales taking place every Saturday for the last two months.

“June and July would normally be quiet for us. Weather has been really tough for the last two to three weeks up here in the northwest and we are probably seeing weanlings coming out a little earlier due to that. We’ve seen a very good start though, with all classes of weanlings up on price to the tune of €50-€60 compared to last year.”

The clearance rate on Saturday was 99%. The general run of good-quality Charolais/Limousin calves around 400kg had no issue hitting €1000 (€2.50/kg). Weanlings at or over 500kg were a little easier, with not as many customers around the ring for the heavier types. These weanlings were making €2.30-€2.40/kg.

The Feeny brothers from Enniscrone, Co Sligo, had a great day out, selling 11 November/December Charolais x weanlings. They weighed 393kg on average and sold for €1,155 (€2.93/kg) each.

Lighter weanlings were also a very good trade, with €3/kg being paid for some of the fancier lots.

The first prize winner in the Limousin section was a September-born weanling weighing 385kg and sold for €1,155 (€3/kg). The first prize winner in the Charolais section was an October-born weanling weighing 485kg and sold for €1,250 (€2.57/kg).

Commission rates at Dowra Mart are €9.50 to the buyer and 2% to the seller.
