“I think the scheme is alright but if we got it on all the animals that we sold in 2019 it would better, The dates are tight and it will be hard to get any sizeable compensation out of it.
“€100 is plenty if they gave us that longer period on more animals. I don’t think it should have been paid to suckler farmers. The money would be too low and become meaningless. It needs to be paid out before the end of the year. I’m a member of the Bord Bia quality assurance scheme so that doesn’t bother me.
“Trade is good – it’s too dear for buying, very good for selling. I’d say they are up €100 on last year.”

“The scheme is fine. Anything you’d get money out of is good. It’s badly wanted.
“I think €100/head is a fair payment. They’re all happy with that, I didn’t hear anybody complain.
“I think suckler farmers should have been paid something. They have the best animals and unless we support them we’ll lose them forever.
“It should be paid out now straight away, in the next month anyway. Store cattle are fierce dear at the moment.
“It’s only a hobby for many. You couldn’t make money buying cattle at the moment.”

“It’s a good bonus to get after a very difficult spring.
“I’m happy with it anyway and a lot of the farmers I have spoken to are happy as well.
“It won’t make us up, but it might pay a meal bill or something like that. It’s only really covering losses.
“Suckler farmers have been supported with other schemes like BEEP and BDGP.
“If you pay out to too many, the money gets very small.
“The payment rate of €100/head is OK. Store cattle are very dear, too dear for what we are getting in the factory.”

“I’m happy with the role out of this compared to other schemes as there’s not as many conditions attached to it.
“It’s definitely a help. For the guys who have the 100 cattle killed, it’s a big boost to those. I hope it will all be taken up and it will all be used and maybe we’ll see it being kicked back into the ring again
“The suckler-bred cattle weren’t hit as much as the finishers. What I hope would happen is the people that get that €100 would give it back to the suckler man in the ring. Although there’s no money yet, we seem to be seeing a bit of that already as there’s great confidence there.”

“It’s a really important scheme. We lost a lot of money in the spring finishing cattle.
“While I welcome the money, we can’t keep running to put sticking plasters on the industry. The system is broken and it needs root and branch changes for the future.
“Getting the money out fast will be very important for everybody.
“It’s a better scheme than the last one. The last one had too many conditions attached. It’s good to see this one being kept simple.”
