Rainfall levels in excess of 70mm were reported by farmers for the second time in two days in west Cork this weekend.

The severity of the rainfall was localised and varied throughout the region, with flooding resulting in road closures around the Clonakilty, Rathbarry, Dunmanway, Bantry and Sheep's Head areas.

The area had escaped wetter weather until now and ground conditions have become a bit more challenging in some parts.

Disruption

There has been a slight disruption to milk collection and co-op deliveries but lorries have been able to get in everywhere. However, some places have proved tricky to get to as roads have been trenched by flood waters in places.

Road closures

The R597 between Rosscarbery and Glandore was badly damaged following last Thursday's rain. Following this Cork County Council carried out remedial work on the section on Friday to make it passable.

The road from the N71 to Rathbarry at Kilruvane bridge was also damaged. It had just reopened following resurfacing work.

However, the area was hit with extremely heavy rainfall in the early hours of Saturday morning which resulted in parts of the road being washed away again.

This section of the Wild Atlantic Way and remains closed until further notice.

The main N71 road between Rosscarbery and Connagh also experienced severe flooding again and diversions remain in place.
