Milk intake by Irish co-ops was estimated at 984.7 million litres for July 2020, representing a 4.4% increase over July 2019 the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has reported.

In comparison with July 2019 figures; butter production increased by 7.5% to 30,360 tonnes and skimmed milk powder increased by 2.9% to 19,650 tonnes.

The CSO reported July 2019 figures at 942 billion litres, a 10% lift on the 2018 figure.

Co-ops

Glanbia estimates suggested July milk supply was up by about 6%. Dairygold estimate supply was up by 2.5%, with Lakeland Dairies estimating it was up 6%.

Arrabawn estimated July supply was up almost 7% and was running 5% ahead year to date. Aurivo was up 5.5% for July.

The west Cork co-ops were up by between 3% and 6%. Kerry Group supply bounced up 2% in July.

Maintain yields

Good grass growth and favourable weather helped to maintain yields. The Irish Farmers Journal milk league suggested the July supply was very close to the one billion litre mark.

August milk supply is likely to be above last year’s supply for the same month despite the rain and storms over the last two weeks.

Kerry milk supplies are up 1.8% for the month of August compared to the same period last year, but milk supplies have flatlined for the last two weeks due to the heavy rainfall.
