Saturday was a jam-packed day in the pedigree world, with a number of sales taking place both here and across the water. One of the biggest sales in Ireland was the Irish Hereford Breed Society premier in Tullamore.
In these strange times, buyers were scarce on the ground due to restrictions, but online buyer activity helped greatly in boosting trade. Many prospective buyers had come early in the morning to view the animals before going home to bid. While the top price was much improved on the year at €4,600, overall the bull trade struggled. This wasn’t entirely down to the year we’re having, as the sale has come to be known as a pedigree breeder sale to secure a stock bull and lacks commercial buyers. This meant only 17 of the 33 bulls forward sold, a slightly higher clearance rate than in 2019. The bull average was back €500 on the year, however, at €2,650.
Topping trade was one of the first bulls sold through the ring, Tullaha Donny. Bred by Maura Neenan from Broadford, Co Limerick, this January 2019-born bull is a son of stock bull Rossmore Nelson Mandela. A prize-winner at several shows in 2019, he sold carrying five stars on the replacement index and having already served cows and heifers.
Next best at €3,600 was Ardstewart Eby Gum from Nelson and Wade McCrabbe, Lifford, Co Donegal. This five-star terminal bull is a son of Cill Cormaic Prince 2, with Kilsunny Goliath and Yarram Pompeii in the back breeding.

Only one other bull broke the €3,000 mark – Duibhgiolla Lad, which sold for €3,100. Bred by K and M Diffley based in Co Leitrim, this son of Black Water Lad also has Haven Wizard and Yarram Pompeii in his back breeding. Born June 2019, he carries three stars on the terminal index.

Hitting a price of €2,900 was the July 2019-born Trillick Showman. Bred and exhibited by JJ Farrell from Longford, this bull was secured by a pedigree and commercial breeder based in Dublin. Sired by Glaslough Rooney, he is out of Free Town Hotspur-bred dam Trillick Sharon.
Just behind this and selling for €2,800 was Beaghmore Pilot from Leila McCabe, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim. This March 2019-born bull is a son of successful AI bull Gageboro Morgan, while the dam goes back to Bowmount Storm.
All buyers of these top five priced bulls received €200 towards their purchase from Hereford Prime.
Frank Harrington from Strokestown in Co Roscommon sold his top bull, FH Showman 2, for €2,650. This five-star son of Yarram Unique is out of homebred cow FH Blossom Celine.
Just behind this at a price of €2,600 was Grianan Uncle Sam. Bred by Tom and Anselm Fitzgerald, the end of July 2019-born bull was sired by the previously mentioned Gageboro Morgan and is out of the same dam as the successful stock sire Grianan Parker, who bred last year’s national show champion.
The female clearance rate was similar to that of the bulls, with nine of the 17 forward selling.
The average price for heifers fell at just over €2,100, with two selling for €3,000 or more. Topping trade was Appel 1 Savannah from John Appelbe, Clonakilty, Co Cork. This daughter of former national champion Solpoll 1 Lawman was born in August 2019 and sold for €3,050.

Appelbe also sold his second exhibit, another yearling heifer, for €2,750. This heifer was homebred on both sides with her pedigree featuring Netherhall 1 Oz Daffy and the aforementioned Solpoll 1 Lawman. Both Appelbe heifers were secured by online bidders.
Taking the second top female price was Kye Holly 867 from Padraig McGrath, Elphin, Co Roscommon. This four-star daughter of Glaslough Rooney is out of a Free Town Hotspur-bred dam. Born March 2019 she had a number of prospective buyers on her from entering the ring before the hammer eventually dropped at €3,000.

Scanned 17 weeks in calf to Airhill Qaseh, she hit the market at €2,600.
