This year’s British Limousin Cattle Society autumn premier took place in Carlisle on Saturday, with a top price of 35,000gns recorded.

Securing the top price was Northern Ireland-bred bull Ampertaine Punch. Bred by well-known exhibitor James McKay, this is the second year in a row the Ampertaine herd has topped the sale.

Homebred on both sides, Punch is the first son to be sold by the 35,000gns Carlisle supreme champion Ampertaine Majestic and dam Ampertaine Millie. Securing the high-seller were Messers Boden and Davies of the Sportsman herd.

It proved quite an exceptional day for McKay, who sold his three bulls to an impressive average of £16,730.

Good day for breed

Punch was one of six bulls which broke the five-figure mark in what can be described as a relatively good day for the breed considering that the ongoing restrictions no doubt had an effect on purchasers present. In total, 61 bulls sold to average £6,683, up £858 on the year but with 23 fewer bulls sold.

The second highest price of the day was also achieved by a fellow Northern Irish breeder when Stephen Reel’s Gorrycam Phantom was knocked down at 24,000gns. This 16-month-old bull is a son of Lodge Hamlet with Wilodge Cerberus on the dam’s side. This line has previously bred bulls at 28,000gns, 26,000gns and 20,000gns.

Southern Irish breeding was behind the next best priced bull when Pabo Procters sold for 18,000gns. This bull is a son of Derrygullinane Kingbull, male champion at the international congress back in 2016 for breeder Gerry Walsh, Ballina, Co Mayo. Purchased at the Irish premier sale in Roscrea that autumn for €11,300, he is breeding exceptionally well for new owner WP Hughes and Sons. Securing Procters were Messrs Jenkinson for the Whinfellpark herd.

Hitting a price tag of 16,500gns was Maraiscote Pedro from J Nimmo. This son of the 50,000gns Bassingfield Machoman is out of a cow by Irish-bred bull Virginia Andy. This April 2019-born bull was secured by the Killerton herd.

The Maraiscote herd sold more than any other herd at the sale, with four selling to an average of £9,582.

Redriver Powerful was next in line when he sold for 14,000gns. This 17-month-old bull was sired by the aforementioned Lodge Hamlet and is out of a homebred dam by Haltcliffe BMW. Bred and exhibited by Mrs J Hunter, he was the choice of Balfour Baillie.

Last of the five-figure sums was a call of 11,000gns for the 15-month-old Millgate Paul. This bull is another from a Northern Irish breeder, this time Michael Loughran from Cookstown, Co Tyrone. Paul is a son of the home-bred sire Millgate Jack and dam Millgate Ita, a 10,000gns Swarland Eddie daughter.

A further 21 of the 61 bulls sold hit between 5,000gns and 9,000gns.
