New figures from Teagasc, show that 79.6% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on tillage farms specialising in crop production actually come from cattle on the farm.

Tillage farms can often have a cattle or sheep sideline to the main enterprise and the National Farm Survey 2019 Sustainability Report, indicates that a further 9.7% of emissions on tillage farms were from sheep.

Only 10.7% of GHG emissions were generated from crop production, and overall the average tillage farm emitted 130.9t of CO2 equivalent of agricultural GHG emissions in 2019.

Some 26% of emissions were mostly associated with chemical fertiliser application. Higher emissions per hectare were associated with higher economic performance.
