Tech

The Google Pixel 5

One of the most hotly debated topics of the 21st century is the issue of Samsung/Android v Apple/iOS.

For example, Samsung and Android users will defend their respective brand to the death for their sensible features such as easy set-up and a (usually) good-quality camera. On the other hand, Apple users will be quick to point out Samsung pictures appear overly saturated when viewed on other brands of phone, not to mind the sad appearance of emojis on Androids.

Cue: the Google Pixel 5 – the ultimate balance between the two rivals. Now admittedly, this writer is an iPhone 11 user, so the first noticeable feature of the Pixel is it’s weight. It is extremely light in comparison and fits snugly in almost every pocket, even in it’s case.

Similar to a lot of new smartphones, it has an edge-to-edge screen, a swipe-up home button and fingerprint recognition for unlocking (conveniently placed on the back of the phone). Screen unlocking is also done by way of a four-digit code, although annoyingly it does not unlock straight after the four digits but rather by “ X-X-X-X ENTER” – a meniscule design flaw, I know, but pesky none the same.

The phone, as the brand would suggest, comes pre-loaded with all of your Google applications and has plenty of “Tips” prompts for you to get the best user experience.

And for the part we all want to know – the camera is extremely impressive. It comes with features including a cinematic pan, an ultrawide lens, a “Portrait Light” mode as well as easily navigated shadows/exposure controls on screen. You can also take advantage of its “Photo Sphere” tool for a fish-eye effect and something which baffled this user is Google Lens. Don’t know what the hell you’re looking at some days? Snap a picture of it and your phone will give you all the zGoogle results on the item – including where to buy if that’s what you need.

As for the battery life, it’s second to none. It lasts a full two days without charge, but if you’re a heavy user, never fear – when you drag down your notification centre, your phone will give you an estimate on how long it expects to last on average usage.

The Google Pixel 5 can be purchased sim-free on the Google store (store.google.com) for €618.77, but is also available at different price points with Vodafone depending on the bill pay plan you choose.
