The week before Christmas is always a very busy time on farms as the amount of time that can be dedicated to farming is usually curtailed due to off-farm commitments – and that’s not a bad thing.

This year is extra unusual as the country is likely to be in a third COVID-19 lockdown before the new year bells toll. Much like the previous lockdowns, farming shouldn’t really be affected.

Supplies

Back to farms, the key thing is to order in enough supplies to get you through the Christmas period. Remember, many places close on Christmas Eve so keep that in mind if you plan to pick things up.

The key things are diesel and animal feed. Check stocks of each and order extra if necessary. On winter milk farms things are bit more complicated as there are more moving parts compared to spring-calving farms, where most cows are now dry.

Supplies of calf milk replacer, animal remedies and other supplies are more urgently required on these farms than on many others.

Machine breakdowns

One area that can cause lots of problems over Christmas is machine breakdowns, including automatic scrapers and milking machines. Consider having a supply of parts including water fittings in stock in case routine items need to be replaced.

Have some salt for gritting yards in place for fear of severe weather.

Other than that don’t forget to take the time out over Christmas to take a breather and enjoy time with family.
