Incredible Edibles, the primary school programme by Agri Aware that educates children about healthy diets and food origin, is back once again.

It is a free programme and since its start in 2008, 500,000 school children have taken part in the programme.

The programme supplies schools and students with a grow pack that contains all they need to grow their own vegetables at school. Students get to grow, cook and eat all their produce.

Minister for State at the Department of Education Josepha Madigan launched the programme at Airfield Estate in Dublin on 26 November.

Locally sourced and healthy

Agri Aware chair Alan Jagoe said: “We hope the children who take part in Incredible Edibles will develop a love of locally sourced, quality homegrown food.

"They will also gain an awareness of the importance, the time and effort, and the sense of reward for such endeavours too.”

Minister Madigan got to try some homemade soup from the Incredible Edible harvest at the launch.

“It is crucial that we create national awareness about the importance of health eating, especially for young people. Nothing trumps the quality of fresh food Irish food. Our standards are second to none.

"The Incredible Edibles programme empowers students by giving them the knowledge and skills they need to ensure a healthy diet,” she said.

Incredible Edibles can cover 1,800 schools and works on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested schools can now register for the programme here.
