With the lifting of restrictions, throughout Ireland, men’s sheds are beginning to emerge from their lengthy hibernation (which, for some, date back to March 2020).
With tentative signs that the worst may be over for good, we must never forget the thousands of acts of solidarity, friendship and selflessness that got us to this point. As ever, Ireland’s sheds were in the forefront – clasping hands across the void in the hope of a better future; a future which, with any luck, is now beginning to dawn.
Waterville Men’s Shed, Co Kerry
Shedders are among the most socially responsible and community-minded of us all, and a full, safe, nationwide return to the shed will be their rich – and richly deserved – reward. Already, the wheels have begun to turn throughout the country.
Waterville in Co Kerry is famed for its association with telegraphy and Charlie Chaplin. It will now have a new outlet for communication and laughter, as the Waterville Men’s Shed prepares to open its doors for the first time.

Green shoots: Waterville Men's Shed, Co Kerry, will open its doors in the spring.
This sprouting of another dot on the men’s sheds map is sure to be a joyous and hopeful occasion, after two years of uncertainty. The hard-working shed committee have moved heaven and earth (mostly earth) to bring matters to this exciting point, and the roof on the shed’s impressive new premises was recently completed.
The shed is due to open in spring 2022, and we’ll bring you further details on this triumph of community and solidarity in the weeks and months ahead.
Armagh Men’s Shed
The ancient city of Armagh was an early adopter in the sphere of men’s sheds, and its shedders have been flying the banner high from the very first days of the movement in Ireland.
It too has now fully reopened, and has embarked on one of the community-spirited projects that have made Armagh Men’s Shed a byword for civic pride. To brighten the new year, the Armagh shedders decided to undertake a project with as much colour and cheer as possible, to dispel the January gloom and kick off 2022 in style.
The eventual outcome – a set of the most vivid and striking bird boxes ever witnessed north of the border, or anywhere else – is a testament to the shed’s ability to capture the mood of the times and respond to the needs of its community. Look out for them adorning the proud gardens of a proud city when next you venture to Armagh.
Castlebar Men’s Shed, Co Mayo
Castlebar is another hotbed of the Irish Men’s Sheds movement, and the shedders’ extensive efforts under challenging COVID-19 conditions have been recognised for the small miracles they were.
The shed was recently named a “Mayo COVID Hero” for its programme of internal and external renovation, carried on during the enforced lay-off from March 2020.
These include the installation of an IT room and equipment, improvements which point to a shed looking to the future after the trials of the past two years failed to quench its indomitable spirit.
This recognition, bestowed upon the shed by the Connaught Tribune, is the very least its efforts deserve.
