The extremely wet summer in 2015 has resulted in many areas of the west being classified as 'high risk' for the winter of 2015/2016. The graphs below show the clear difference between the overwinter index for 2014/2015 and the summer of 2015.

The Ollerenshaw Index, from Met Eireann, is used as a predictive model to evaluate the climatic conditions of a season for liver fluke development.

Values are assessed as follows:

  • M < 300 = little or no disease
  • 300> M > 400 = occasional losses
  • M > 400 = high prevalence of disease
  • The model uses monthly estimates of potential evapotranspiration and measured rainfall totals together with the number of raindays to derive the monthly contribution (M) to the seasons index.
