The livestock carrier ship Atlantic M is now on the way to Ireland to collect a second load of cattle for the Turkish market. It unloaded its first load of 1,694 factory weight bulls on arriving at the Turkish port of Darince at the weekend.

It is due to arrive in Ireland on Tuesday 18 October and after veterinary and maritime inspection will be loaded with feeder cattle of up to 350kg. The 7,069t ship has penning for over 3,500 such cattle.

The exporter involved, Meath-based Viastar, has acquired weanlings over recent weeks and placed them in 21-day quarantine. This is just one of the strict health requirements imposed by the Turkish veterinary authorities.

Viastar owner James Mallon plans to send further boatloads to this market over the autumn and as a result is continuing to assemble suitable weanlings, with his buyers very active this week at marts and buying on farms. He is buying Limousin, Angus, Charolais, Hereford and Simmental animals. He is arranging to charter a second boat to join the route.

The exports by Mallon are a welcome boost to the autumn cattle trade. Live exports are well down – 24% so far in 2016. Last week, in addition to the exports to Turkey, 179 weanlings were exported to Italy, 193 to Spain, 198 to Slovakia and 180 to Morocco, the majority of them bulls.
