DEAR SIR: I just had to take up on low-cost milk production on demonstration farms as seen on open days around the country.

To mention just a few, we were told at open days in Kilkenny Greenfield and again in Bandon how good they are doing but those farms are the best of land and they were handed milk quota for no charge and told drive on at a time when we were all paying superlevy.

That was our flexi-milk. The only thing that will help farmers is to have milk get scarce – then the price will rise.

Also, there are not many farmers in the country keeping more than 150 cows, yet all the talk is about 400-cow herds and not all top-class land either, so a bit of reality please would help.
