The 90-year-old was found dead at his home in Ballysaggart, Co Waterford, on Saturday evening.

Following the postmortem, a murder investigation was launched on Monday and a man was arrested.

The man appeared in Dungarvan District Court on Wednesday morning.

Paddy was born and bred on the family beef and sheep farm where he lived all his life.

Local councillor Declan Doocey told the Irish Farmers Journal that Paddy was “a lovely, innocent man who wouldn’t hurt a fly”.

“The whole community is devastated and just can’t believe it. You don’t ever imagine something like that happening here.”
