I farm: “In an equity partnership in Milford, Co Cork, and I also do a bit with my father. We started in Milford in January and are milking around 200 cows, supplying Kerry. I’m there full-time and all the young stock are contract-reared at my father’s place in Clare.”

This week: “We’re feeding meal and baled silage for milk as the cows were all housed last week. We’ll open the silage pit for the dry cows this week and we’re moving some of the replacement stock down to Milford as well. The cows are yielding nine litres per day at 5% fat and 4.15% protein.”

Hurling: “I play with Ballyea GAA at home in Clare. Early in the year, during calving, it can be tough enough to keep up with training and farming. We train on a Tuesday and Friday, so I get our relief milker Liam to milk both evenings and I go up home to help with the young stock before training.”

Munster championship: “This year was the first year that we won the county final in Clare, which was massive for us. In the Munster semi-final against Thurles Sarsfield, we were down seven points with just eight minutes to go and we came back to win after extra time – it was a great feeling. In the Munster final, we were the underdogs again. We got caught up in tactics over the last few years which held us back, so this year we just went out and did what we do best; hurl.”

Quotable quote: “If you’re full-time farming it can be difficult to do that alongside the GAA, particularly for dairy farmers who are tied down to two milkings a day. But I enjoy the hurling. It’s an hour and a half away from the farm and it’s good to keep a balance in life.”
