I farm: “Mainly dairy, with a small bit of beef and forestry. I milk around 100 cows, all Holstein Friesians. I fatten the calves that don’t get sold, usually around eight to 10 at a time. I’ve 155 acres and another 36 acres of forestry.”

This week: “I’m taking it handier. I’m drying up the last of the spring-calvers and dosing a few cattle. There’s a bit of Christmas shopping to be done too.”

Performance: “I’m hoping to produce 4,600 to 4,700 litres per cow in a year. Protein was 3.3% and butterfat was just over 4% this autumn.”

Milk: “I supply Lisavaird Co-op in Cork, which supplies Carbery. I was getting 27.7c/litre in November, which was quite good considering. Carbery has been very strong on price.”

Forestry: “I planted forestry in 1990, 2000 and 2001. There’s not a huge amount of work to be done after that. 17 acres was damaged by a storm last year and that will cost €700 to €800/acre to replant.”

Winner of Bin Your Bills: “I’ll have to re-draw my Christmas wishlist! When I saw the e-mail, I honestly thought it was a scam – I never win anything. I’m absolutely delighted. We built a new milking parlour last year, so to win this is a big thing – it eases the financial pressure.”

IFA: “The figures are just mind- boggling. I think everyone is shocked at their allowances and benefits. I think they need to start from scratch with new leadership.”

Family: “It’s just myself and my wife Ann-Marie.”

Quotable quote: “A lot of the lads talking about running for election are too close to the establishment already. Maybe it’s time for new blood.”
