I Farm: “About 350 acres of tillage crops here in Wexford. Our crops are mostly spring barely, winter wheat, spring wheat and oil seed rape. The yield this year was really strong, we’re delighted with how it went. Everyone in the area was pretty much the same. We hope to get sowing some winter crops in the next while.”

Contracting: “We have a family contracting business as well as the farm. We do a nice bit of work here in the area with sowing and harvesting. Contractor is good work, tough but good. The business is in its third generation now and going strong. It started with my grandfather Tommy before being passed on to my father Nick and his brother Jim and now I’m involved. You always want to try and drive on to make the business grow, we picked up a bit of extra business this year so that was good. It’s full steam ahead.”

This week: “I suppose it’s all about the ploughing championships for us this week. The whole family is involved this year. I’m ploughing in the under 28 conventional class, my father is in the two furrow vintage class and my grandfather is in the two furrow trailer vintage class. It’s hard to beat heading out there with the father and grandfather. This is my first event of the year. I came third at the under 21 conventional class at last year'snational ploughing. It's great that I can be ploughing for work but also practicising for competitions”

Machinery: “I have a little SAME tractor with a kverneland plough, it’s a nice little set up. My father and my grandfather both use Massey Ferguson 35 tractors with their ploughs. The Massey 35 is a fine machine, seriously reliable for these type of events.”

Farmers: “Farmers are very worried about prices this year. The harvest was exceptional but when you’re out on the country like we are, you hear a lot of them talking. There’s a fair bit of negativity out there. Prices are back to where they were years ago but the crops are great. It’s not easy to get the balance.”

Quotable quote: “Ploughing is ploughing. For me, it’s about going out there with the family and enjoying it. Winning doesn’t even enter my thinking, it’s a great skill and fierce enjoyable.”
