The Grass and Clover Recommended List of Varieties for 2016 was published by the Crop Evaluation and Certification Division of the Department of Agriculture on Tuesday, with five new varieties recommended.
Four new perennial ryegrass varieties and one new white clover variety have been recommended to increase yield potential in 2016.
The varieties
Teagasc is providing a late-heading diploid named Kerry, while Danish breeder DLF Seeds A/S is providing an intermediate-heading diploid variety named Nifty and a late-heading tetraploid named Xenon.
A late-heading tetraploid named Alfonso is being provided by German breeder Deutsche Saatveredelung AG (DSV). Finally, IBERS is providing the new white clover variety named Aberace.
The new grass varieties are recommended for increased yield potential combined with good spring and autumn yield performance. The new, small-leaved clover variety competes well with the accompanying grass.
According to the Department, using these varieties to reseed old and degraded pasture, in conjunction with appropriate soil pH and fertility, will:
Increase grass dry matter output per hectareImprove response to fertiliser (especially Nitrogen)Extend the grazing season in spring and autumnImprove animal performanceIncrease profitsRemoved from the list
Outclassed grass varieties removed from the list are the intermediate diploid Rodrigo, intermediate tetraploids Giant and Trend, the late diploid Mesquita and the late tetraploid Abercraigs.
The list is available to download from the Department’s website here.
