Suckler and beef farmer Joe Brady has been elected as the new IFA national rural development chair.
Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Joe said he had put himself forward for the position because of the “vital role the rural development committee plays overall in the entire IFA organisation”.
In his term as chair, which lasts four years, Joe said that focusing on schemes will be a huge priority as “so many farmers are depending on different schemes right across the country”.
In particular, a major priority for the chair will be to secure timely payments across all schemes through the charter of farmers’ rights.
Improving farm incomes
The former IFA county chair and regional chair also added that he plans to ensure the reopening of GLAS III by 1 January 2017, and bring up the number of farmers involved to the initial figure of 50,000 as opposed to the current 37,000.
Flor McCarthy, the outgoing chair and unsuccessful presidential candidate, has made an “enormous contribution,” he said.
Joe, who is from Stradone in Co Cavan, said he will focus on improving schemes such as Farm Assist, with “farming incomes currently at an all-time low due to poor commodity prices”.
