Five have been selected as the new scholars for the 2018 Nuffield Ireland scholarship.

The five were whittled down after 22 applications and a two-stage interview process.

The new scholars for 2017 are:

Tommy Heffernan, Arklow, Co Wicklow. Tommy is a vet from Co Kerry living and working in Co Wicklow.

Co Kerry dairy farmer Karol Kissane has also been selected. Kissane converted from beef to dairying in 2013. He has a background as a tax manager in financial services.

Klaus Laitenberger from Co Leitrim works for the Orangic Trust as a farm and horticulture inspector as well as an organic horticultural consultant. As well as owning an online seed company, Klaus has self-published a number of gardening books.

Joe Lyng from Co Kilkenny has been selected for the 2018 Nuffied Scholarship. Lyng is a business manager for Glanbia agri-business.

Finally, Co Cork dairy farmer Colm O’Leary has been selected. He farms in partnership with his parents Tim and Katherine.

The new scholars receive a travel bursary of €14,000 and will undertake six weeks travel on one of the six Global Focus Programme (GFP) itineraries to countries such as China, US, Brazil, Africa, Eastern Europe, Japan, India and Philippines.

The new scholars will be introduced, and will give an outline of their study topic, at the Nuffield Ireland Annual Conference on Friday 6 October 2017.

Nuffield scholars are supported by the FBD Trust, IFA, the Irish Farmers Journal, the Golden Jubilee Trust, Meat Industry Ireland, Aurivo Co-op Glanbia, Dairymaster and LIC.
