Cow cullings in New Zealand are 2.5% behind the level recorded at the same time in the 2014/15 season.
Cumulative slaughters for the season to date now total 1,031,936 head.
However, when compared with the same time in the 2013/14 season, the cow cull is significantly higher now and is up 17%.
Up week on week
In the 45th week of the New Zealand season (the second week of August) slaughters were up 2.3% on the previous week, totalling 11,530.
This was also a 2.5% rise on the corresponding week last year.
In the North Island, there were 8,088 cullings, which was a slight drop from the 9,094 the week before.
Slaughters on the South Island went up from 3,174 head to 3,442 head.
Irish figures
The latest figures for Irish cullings also show a decrease compared with last year.
Figures published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) for July 2016 show a 5.8% decline in cattle slaughterings compared with July 2015.
In July of this year 136 cattle were culled, in comparison with 144 in July of last year.
However, there was an overall increase in animal slaughterings between January and July 2016 compared with the corresponding period of 2015, with cattle slaughterings up by 1.4%,
The figures from the CSO include slaughterings at both meat establishments approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and slaughterhouses and meat plants approved by local authorities.
