Morrisons drops caged eggs

British supermarket chain Morrisons has become the latest retailer to announce that it will stop sourcing eggs from enriched colony cage systems by 2025.

The announcement follows an online petition addressed to the chief executives of Morrisons and Asda calling for the supermarkets to end the sale of eggs from caged hens. The petition has received 180,000 signatures in the first week and was started by 14-year-old Lucy Gavaghan from Sheffield.

Last week, Tesco announced that it would stop sourcing eggs from caged systems following an online petition, also started by Gavaghan. It received 280,000 signatures. UK supermarket chain Iceland and international food company Sodexo also made similar announcements this week.

Strong start to store lamb trade

The first store lamb sale in Plumbridge mart last week saw a strong trade for most lambs. The majority of lots were Suffolk or Texel cross, with half weights ranging from 18kg to 20kg and making between £70 and £72.

Most stores were not weighed as they entered the ring, but a pen of 12 Texel cross lambs that weighed 19.5kg made £71.50 and a batch of Mule ram lambs that had less conformation and condition weighed 20kg, and made £64.50.
