Screggan, Tullamore, Co Offaly, is home to this year’s championships and while last year’s event saw over 250,000 people make their way through the mini-city that is the National Ploughing Championships, people in the midlands see that they can make a quick buck and then multiply it by a thousand.

Hotels and B&Bs have been booked now for months, so some nice people around Tullamore are putting rooms in their homes on Airbnb to assist the late-comers looking for accommodation. Airbnb, for those of you who do not know what it is, is where hosts put up a room in their house (or their entire house/apartment) for rent. It's handy for those travelling on a budget.

Like every good farmer, I've left things to the last minute when looking about a place to stay.

One home in Killenard, Co Laois, that I found, is renting its spare room for exactly €1,000 for a five-night stay. At €200 a night, two people can stay in this double room, which has a bed, a bedside table and a carpet. The hosts are newbies to Airbnb - I hope they're not jumping on the bandwagon.

Unfortunately, this deal is no longer available to book, because some unfortunate soul has already done the honours.

Don’t worry though, there’s another “amazing two bed mews house” with free wifi close to Mullingar, which will get you to the Ploughing in no time. This one’s cheaper than the last though. It fits four people too, if you don’t mind sharing a bed. You could book from Monday to Friday, to wake up early on the Tuesday and just head over the road, it will only cost you €815.

That’s only €326 more than if you wanted to book it the week after. Good to see someone's making money off farmers this year.
