Tuesday's meeting follows on from a discussion that took place earlier this month with the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA), the Agricultural Consultants Association (ACA); Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association and Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA).

At this meeting, head of the ACA Tom Dawson told the committee about the issues facing farmers because of confusion surrounding land.

"This is a critical year for payments and we are at the 11th hour," he said. "The biggest issue is that assessing eligible land is very subjective - we could all assess land differently.

"Everyone should be singing off same hymn sheet and we cannot give advice with one hand tied behind our back. We don’t have full information," he said.

Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle TD said he is looking forward to a productive meeting with the Department.

“With what is a crucial first year of a new Common Agricultural Policy, there were calls for more joined up thinking between the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht," he said.

"The Committee looks forward to a productive and focused engagement with Department officials tomorrow, with a view to generating a momentum that will deliver practical solutions for farmers on marginal land.”

The meeting will commence at 2pm tomorrow Tuesday 28 April. Members of the public can watch the meeting live .
